Solar power beats coal in Europe, but also exposes energy system flaws

Renewable energy – solar, wind, hydro, and more – is undoubtedly the future, not only for its sustainability but also for its newfound affordability. In a groundbreaking moment, solar panels have surpassed coal plants in generating electricity for the first time ever. This win, however, has revealed some critical faults in our energy system. In this article, we take a deep dive into solar energy, its challenges, and its future.

The Dutch Solar Boom:

Nowhere is the solar boom more evident than in the Netherlands, where government support has played a pivotal role. Over 100 megawatts of solar panels per 100,000 Dutch residents make the Netherlands the global leader in total solar capacity, surpassing even sunny Spain and China.

Government subsidies have incentivized homeowners and property companies to convert rooftops into mini energy parks, contributing to the country’s impressive solar network. In contrast to wind, hydro or geothermal power, solar has a key advantage of being quick to install, making it easy for households to make the transition.

Across Europe, many others are stepping in the footsteps of the Dutch example. However, this has accelerated since the start of the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation. This has brought us to record levels in June 2023.

Challenges on the Path to Green Energy:

“The Dutch government’s policy to incentivise solar power works well, but it’s a little too successful,” said Jorrit de Jong, spokesman at Dutch electric grid operator TenneT.

The recent surge in solar energy production has led to a mismatch between supply and demand in some areas. For instance, electricity prices in Germany turned negative as solar output reached a record level. Negative prices occur when suppliers pay consumers to use electricity. While renewable energy contributes to this, conventional plants may also be needed for grid stability.

Our current power system wasn’t planned for these kinds of flexibility needs. To address these challenges, a flexible power system is required. Currently, the power grid lacks the adaptability needed for the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. Integrating batteries connected to the grid could help store excess energy during peak solar and wind production and sell it when renewables are less productive. Moreover, incentivizing consumers to use power during periods of high renewable energy production could further balance the grid.

Looking Ahead:

As we journey through the world of solar energy, we must confront these challenges while envisioning a sustainable future. This transition will require innovation and collaboration to build a power system capable of accommodating renewable energy’s ebb and flow. Together, we can create a cleaner, greener, and more efficient energy landscape that benefits both the environment and our economies.

Even though solar and wind production have been successful in replacing coal and gas plants, Europe still has a long way to go to achieve its net-zero emissions goal by 2050. The existing electricity grids, designed for centralised generators, struggle to cope with the decentralised nature of renewable energy sources. This challenge will be put to the test this summer, as grids need to adapt to the ever-changing energy landscape.
